Maia Quartet, Daniel Levitov and Karin Brown
Sunday,
Sept. 26, 2010
— 3pm
Since its formation in 1990, the Maia Quartet, Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Iowa,
has established itself nationally as an ensemble of innovation and versatility. The Maia Quartet's
commitment to the work of living composers has led to premieres of compositions by Pierre
Jalbert, Dan Coleman, Vivian Fung and Ronn Yedidia.
Recognized for their innovative approach to programming, the Quartet has
spearheaded projects both at the University of Iowa and beyond. In November 2009,
as part of the many worldwide events marking the 200th year since Haydn's death,
the Quartet presented "Haydn Slam," a five-day marathon event in which the Maya Quartet
and other ensembles perfomed all of Haydn's eighty-three string quartets.
Daniel Levitov
Cellist Daniel Levitov performs nationally as a soloist, chamber, and orchestral musician.
A native of Lincoln, Levitov studied with Tracy Sands and later with Carol Work.
Though I had great teachers in undergraduate and graduate schools, it is the training that
I received in Lincoln that reverberates in my own teaching and performing, he says.
Karin Brown
Violist Karin Brown is a violist in the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and performs frequently
as solo and chamber musician in the Baltimore/Washington area.

Cassatt Quartet
Sunday, Oct. 24,
2010 — 3pm
Established in 1985 and named for the renowned American impressionist painter Mary Cassatt,
the New York City based Cassatt String Quartet has performed throughout North America, Europe,
and the Far East
Their annual educational residency, Cassatt In The Basin! in Odessa, Texas culminates at the
Texas Music Educators Association conference in San Antonio. The group celebrates Samuel
Barber's 100th birthday year in 2010 through performances of Dover Beach and the famous
Adagio for String Quartet.
Cellist Nicole Johnson has always regarded Lincoln as her ancestral musical home. Her father
grew up here and became a professional cellist, largely on the basis of his studies with Carol
Work. As a third generation string quartet player, she is thrilled to be returning to Lincoln
with her colleagues in the Cassatt Quartet, and to try to add a little to the musical life of
a city that has added so much to hers.

Ames Piano Quartet
Friday,
Feb. 18, 2011
— 8pm
The Ames Piano Quartet, the resident chamber music ensemble at Iowa State
University, holds a unique position in the chamber music field as one of
the few piano quartets in the world. The combination of their lush string
sound, blended with the orchestral quality of the piano, produces an
exquisite and rare sonority. The Washington Post aptly described it
as one of the most heavenly combinations of instruments around.
The ensemble is thirty-five years old now and has toured throughout the United States, Europe,
and the Far East. Most recently, the Quartet spent a week concertizing and teaching in Havana,
Cuba -- the first American chamber music group to perform there in over forty years. The
concert in Lincoln will be their fourth since 1985.
Cellist George Work is the son of renowned Lincoln musicians George and Carol Work.
